Agents disrupt voting in Anambra East amid vote-buying allegations

Anambra State, Nigeria – Reports from local observers indicate that voting in parts of Anambra East Local Government Area was disrupted amid alleged vote-buying activities and interference by party agents during a recent election.

According to election-monitoring groups, party agents and operatives in polling units in the area offered cash, goods and inducements to voters, while some polling units experienced interference from non-official actors. For example, observers noted that in some units agents collected names or bank account details of voters in exchange for vote inducements. (Radio Nigeria)

In addition to vote-buying, there were cases of disruption by party operatives who appear to have sought to influence results or interfere with the voting process in Anambra East. A civil-society report cited the area as one of the locations where thuggery and vote-buying “were most brazen”. (Pulse Nigeria)

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has repeatedly warned that voter inducement is unacceptable and stressed the need for security agencies to prevent vote-buying in the forthcoming polls in the state. (allAfrica.com)

Electoral observers say that the presence of agents offering money or goods in exchange for voting for particular parties undermines the credibility of the electoral process in Anambra East and raises concerns about the fairness of results. (AphriaPUB)

Authorities in the state have been urged to take swift action: monitoring polling units, enforcing rules banning inducement and ensuring that any party agents involved in vote-buying are sanctioned. Whether these measures will sufficiently restore confidence in the area’s electoral integrity remains to be seen.
